Children's Hospital of Orange County will lay off 42 workers by the end of the year, according to a notice filed with the state.

"Despite our cost-saving efforts and due to economic factors beyond our control, including a significant increase in unemployed families on public insurance programs with low reimbursement levels, we made the difficult decision to reduce our organization’s workforce," said a statement released by the hospital.

CHOC did not detail what jobs are being eliminated, however, it said no nurses providing patient care at the bedside were being laid off.

It's been a tough year for local hospitals as they see more and more patients unable to pay.

Kaiser Permanente confirmed in August that was laying off 650 in Southern California and in July, St. Joseph Health System said it would reduce staff by a total of 159 at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, St. Jospeh Hospital in Orange, Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and at the Health System office in Orange.

Hopefully those workers will find employment when the Irvine hospital re-opens. It is sad.

    When does Irvine open?

  • indifferent says:

Is CHOC opening an Irvine hospital? I thought that was HOAG

    • Mary Ann Milbourn says:

I'm the reporter who wrote this item. Hoag is rehabbing the former Irvine Regional Hospital and Medical Center. It closed in January and 500 were laid off. Hoag plans to reopen it as a Hoag facility late next summer.

  • Huh? says:

"St. Joseph Health System said it would reduce staff by a total of at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, St. Jospeh Hospital in Orange, Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and at the Health System office in Orange."

Total of what? You didn't put a number.

This should come as no surpise. No profession should escape the semi-depression. Gobblemebt workers should be the first to go since they add nothing to the GDP. But the opposite happens. The private sector which makes government checks and pensions possible are forced to take the hit. The gobblement workers (and I used that term loosely) get a big fat pass. Why is that?? Because they are protected by other gobblement workers, namely politicians who are owned by the unions.

    • Techie714 says:

Tell that to the several hundred County employees laid off in 2009, and several hundred more in 2010. The Sheriff's alone is getting ready for a HUGE layoff in 2010.

      • ocobserver says:

The county ssa office just hired over a hundred laid-off workers back. What the heck are you talking about??? They got a big federal bailout. Didn't you read about it??? What percentage of the 13% unemployed in California do you think are gobblement workers??? .000005%?? hah. Get real, techie. We didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday out here!

        • Techie714 says:

I was not aware of the SSA hire back? Could you provide a link?

        • ocobserver says:

Check it out on google. It was announced that due to federal stimulus money over 100 county ssa jobs (previously laid-off) were restored. That is 100% fact, techie. I heard it on the radio and saw it reported in print.

I have a high school honor student who would be interested in volunteering 10-15 hours per week at a local hosipital within a reasonable driving distant from Huntington Beach.

  • Sammy says:

    UGH!

My wife just got hired there as a pharmacy tech, hopefully it doesn't trickle down,.

All sectors are going to feel the wrath of this economic recession. Cant count on Obama fixing anything. Every step this government makes only makes things worse, but that's what they want. They want you to rely on government. They are stifling the free market and capitalism at every opportunity so that more socialism will be in control. Everything that made America great and what it is today is slowly being dismantled.
