More than 1.4 million Californians were working part-time in September, not out of choice but because their hours had been cut or it was the only job they could find and they needed the money, reports the state Employment Development Department.
That's a nearly 72% increase from a year ago when 840,000 Californians settled for part-time work.
The biggest jump has been in workers who have settled for part-time jobs because they can't find full-time work. Their numbers have soared 83.3% since September 2008.
| Sept. '08 | Sept. '09 | Increase | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usually full-time | 319,000 | 488,000 | 53.2% |
| Usually part-time | 521,000 | 955,000 | 83.3% |
| TOTAL | 840,000 | 1,443,000 | 71.9% |

EDD calls these part-time workers for economic reasons. They are divided into two groups.
"Usually full-time" are those who normally would be working 35 hours or more a week but have been cut back due to slack demand. Those called "usually part-time" are workers who want to work full-time but have taken part-time jobs because they can't find full-time employment.
The numbers are based on responses to an EDD weekly survey. Part-time is considered working less than 35 hours a week.
Did you miss these stories on jobs and the economy ...
Welcome to the new business model in America.
They would rather hire two part time workers than one full time worker. That way they don't have to pay for your healthcare insurance or benefits.
Pretty slick, eh??
The final dash for the cash.
Wait until Odummer approves amnesty. hah.
In all honesty, most of you (75%) perform jobs that a primate could do with a little extra training. Your 'skills' really aren't as important as you might think.
Neither are yours ocobserver. Just in case you don't realize that.
LOL.......
yep and they wonder why california is in the toilet and bankrupt
Sadly, These partial unemployed go uncounted by the Obama regime.
interesting to note: that three out of four weeks EDD workers are supposed to work less than 35 hours per week (the state and union have agreed that the EDD workers will work without pay for their 3 furlough days per month -- unlike the other state departments where they don't get paid but don't work either.) Do you suppose that state workers are considered part time on their furlough weeks?
These jobs are counted by the Obama Administration as "saved". The good news is that these part timers have jobs. What about those still with no work? So how did all that stimulus money help California? Where are the jobs?
The sad thing about the Obama administration is that they didn't know what they were going to do when they got in and still don't know. The whole Obama myth is based on his good diction. There is nothing of substance there at all. "AMAZING!!!!" as Oprah would say...... IDIOT!
yeah, hockey mom is gonna find jobs for us all. unfortunately the only openings will be the infantry or combat support jobs. hockey mom knows what got us out of the last depression, and she's gonna bring that solution to the 21st century. it's the only thing we're good at and about the only field left where america has a strong competitive edge. hockey mom is wise, she knows this. now we just wait for hockey mom to take back this country for christ and give us what we really need--a good war! yea! cheney/palin 2012!
Has OCR reported on this yet?

I'm the reporter who wrote the unemployment extension item above . I got sidetracked by another story but definitely will be writing about the tax withholding.
I just read that story! WHAT A BUNCH OF DIRTY, LOWDOWN, THIEVING DIRTBAGS in Sacramento! Someone ought to start a lynch mob and head it in the direction of the Governor's MANSION and all the little dweebs that were elected on false pretenses!
Don't get so upset at the ecomony in california and our country. In three years we will all be calling this time "The good old days"
