Boeing says it will lay off 1,000 people nationwide in its Integrated Defense Systems unit, which includes 7,230 workers in Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Seal Beach and Irvine.
The company did not say which of its IDS facilities would get cut, how many
positions would be eliminated at each facility or when the layoffs would occur. Affected workers are being notified this week.
Integrated Defense includes Boeing Military Aircraft, Network and Space Systems, and Global Services & Support, a tanker programs unit and Phantom Works, an advanced technology development organization, according to the Boeing Web site.
The Boeing Web site gave this breakdown of IDS workers in Orange County as of April. (It includes all facilities with over 100 employees and contract workers.):
There also are 6,084 workers in Long Beach. IDS employed 71,720 worldwide as of April. (See a map of IDS locations in the U.S. HERE.)
In a statement released by Boeing, Jim Albaugh, head of IDS, attributed the cuts to shifting Defense Department priorities and budget cuts.
"Details are still being worked out, and when decisions are made they will be shared with our employees," said the statement. "In the meantime, the company will continue to engage in discussions with lawmakers and defense policymakers about the relevance of our programs to the warfighter and Boeing's performance on them in order to ensure their long-term viability."

Did you miss these recent stories on jobs and the economy ...
Hooray for Obama! I hope everyone realizes that when Dems are in office, National Defense is ALWAYS cut.
Maybe has something to do with FCS (Future Combat Systems) being completely restructured by the gov.. just a guess
Boeing lost some major contracts and orders for some of their airliners. I was laid off by McDonnell Douglas in the 80's because the Air Force cancelled their contract for the C-117 Airliner. Myself and 12,000 others got the boot, then called back, got the boot again and so on.
Wonder how many of these people voted for "change"? If you did, you knew this was coming with a socialist government in charge.
FCS is being restructured and the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (worked in Anaheim) is getting a 40% cut. Those are were the primary cuts are coming from. But, hey, engineers can go work on some of those stimulus programs, maybe like putting in a new footbridge in some park somewhere, worth 2 months of skilled labor. Or just go on public assistance, Obama will take care of everyone.
The very people who voted for Obamalama are the very people he is putting out of work.
YES WE CAN!!!
sounds like Obama had a hand in this!
Robert Gates, too. Let's not forget him.
I used to work at MDAC in Huntington Beach, then it was bought by Boeing.
The OC Register, had a good series of articles on McDonnell Douglas back in the mid to late 80's. The primary thrust, was how they were fleecing the taxpayers on the Apache Helicopter contract. Standard weren't being met, costs were over run, helo blades weren't lasting anywhere near as long as M.D. claimed, but the high prices stayed.
Most memorable to me was the Register's quotation from some of the Apache's pilots. "The Apache is the world's best helicopter.... when it flies right".
I believe the OCR earned a Pulitzer on that series of articles.
If Boeing kept any of the management I worked for, then they might have problems. DCAS seemed to be in bed with Douglas. The taxpayers had problems, as the OCR's series pointed out.
If those I worked for are laid off, well there is no love lost!
for those who hate government spending, waste, fraud, abuse, corruption and handouts, then cuts in defense spending will come as good news. welfare queens.

Um, Dude, check your math!
Layoff 1,000 which includes 7,230......
