Young people need summer jobs. Employers need free labor. And a new summer program offers both.

With money from the federal stimulus package, the Summer Youth Jobs Program in Anaheim has money to pay the wages and workers compensation costs for the summer employees. Young people ages 14 to 24 from low-income families are eligible to apply for jobs.

Although the program starts soon, there are still openings.

As of the middle of last week, about 300 young people had signed up, but between 350 and 400 slots are available. So far, 150 employers have joined the program, but more work sites can sign up to employ young people at no cost to them, said Marco Lucero, the city's workforce development analyst.

"If there's a time when an employer needs a little more support, it's a great opportunity," Lucero said.

The city is contracting with North Orange County Regional Occupational Program and the Orange County Conservation Corps to run the program. Jobs include clerical, retail, hospitality, landscaping and environmental work. Employees will earn about $8 an hour and work between 20 and 30 hours weekly.

Anaheim received about $1.2 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- the first time it has received federal funding for such an effort in about 10 years, Lucero said. The county of Orange and city of Santa Ana also are offering a similar program with federal stimulus money. (Read about Santa Ana's program HERE.)
