First-time unemployment claims in California are on the rise again with an increase of 2,540 new filings in the week ending June 13, reports the U.S. Labor Department.
Initial claims in California totaled 72,039 that week, the highest since May 2, when they were at 72,078. They had been averaging 67,982 over the intervening six weeks. State officials had no comment on the reason for the increase.
Although high by historic standards — claims for the same week last year totaled 21,099 — the state's first-time filings are well off their highs during the dark days of January, when employers were slashing their staffs. Weekly claims in California peaked at 95,705 in the week ending Jan. 31.
California has also dropped down the list of states reporting claims over 1,000. After often leading the country in filings due to the size of the state's workforce, California ranked fourth in increases in weekly initial claims in the latest report. Florida led with 8,838 new filings followed by Pennsylvania (3,191) and Missouri (2,874).
Fourteen states saw first-time filings drop by more than 1,000, led by Michigan, which reported 5,414 fewer claims. The state said there were fewer auto industry layoffs.
California unemployment hit 11.5% in May after dipping to 11% in April, according to the latest report released June 19. Orange County's jobless rate was 8.6% in May, up from 8.4% in April. June unemployment numbers for the state and county will be released July 17.
Nationwide the Labor Department's preliminary figures showed initial claims rose by 15,000 to 627,000 in the week ending June 20. Continuing claims increased by 29,000 to 6.738 million. Continuing claims, however, are still under the May 30 peak of 6.8 million.

Did you miss these other items on jobs and the economy ...
I thought the savior Barrack Hussain Obama had solved this problem by tripling the National Debt with the Stimulus package.
Well, he promised change. Tripling the debt in less than 6 months is quite a change.
I'm all for change but I wish I knew where the line is. I don't want to be last in the race to third world living.
Wait! I thought the OCR reported that things were getting better last week.
Boy am I confused...
But not really.
Seriously people need to start stocking up on food, water, & ammo. We are preparing for the perfect storm. Inflation will rise greatly by late this year, unemployment benefits will stop coming to peoples homes due to massive debt. The state is completely falling apart with no help in sight. Just wait till the food riots start early next year. If you have already left California you have a chance.....The rest of us are not so lucky...
I'm moving to Austin, TX next month. It's over for California, zero-chance of any recovery. There has not been a single good day since Obama took office. Each day is getting worst it seems.
Yep, California will be a total mess very soon with everyone losing their unemployment insurance. Plus this F%&Ked up state will be insolvent in a few weeks. The masses will overtake all the fast food joints.
New TV Show "The Real Riots of Orange County!"
Yes, we are heading toward a "Running Man" situation.
Ironically, Arnold, who was framed as the "Butcher of Bakersfield" in the movie, may have to actually deal with food riots.
"State officials had no comment on the reason for the increase."
The rise may be partly due to all of the school staff who were given pink slips but had to wait until the end of the school year (the official date of their termination) to file for unemployment. Some schools ended in the 2nd week of June. The rest in the 3rd week (so the rise should continue).
The State Assembly is going to raise taxes to be able to pay for "entitlements" of those who don't pay taxes. Of course those who are being taxes are those who work for a living It is those that are "entitled" that faithfully vote for those politicians who raise the taxes of those working, to provide entitlements to those that don't work, or are illegal but vote anyway.
72,039 people out of work.
Too bad they all can't get together and create one big company so that everyone will be employeed.
And to "Reality" I hate to say this, but you are scaring me.
My hours have been cut from 40 to 27 per week and I am already
feeling desperate. I hope I don't ((SNAP)) next month and do something drastic. I am already feeling the pain of hunger and am hoping I don't get evicted. However, I have to pay my car insurance next week which I feel is a TOTAL waste of my money! I need that money just to survive right now. So, you are saying for everyone to get out of California? Is it better, lets say, in Colorado? If so, then I'm leaving this hell-hole.
Here you people get on board before the train leaves!!

I really wish all the best that are struggling.
Our horrible leader BO said if the stimulus bill (laugh) was passed unemployment would not go past 8%. It is what 11.5%
What is amazing to me are the pieces of crap driving around with Obama stickers on their car, they are retards, just look and wonder how dumb are these people??.Do these people realize what horrible changes we are going through, and are going to go through?? These are the people I hope are slammed.
Not to overstate the obvious, but it's only going to get worse. More job losses, more state taxes, more of our tax dollars going to illegal aliens.
Me, I just sit back and laugh. Laughing while this state and Orange County circle the drain, while they both get ready to flushed away.
