Libraries across Orange County are increasingly adding workshops and tutoring sessions to help people find jobs.

Public librarians are finding that more unemployed people are coming to use free computers, check out books about résumé writing and look at job kiosks and binders. So, from Brea to Mission Viejo, the public centers are also offering free lessons on job searches.

Yorba Linda Public Library for the first time is presenting workshops on job searches and how to file for unemployment benefits.

"What happened was, we felt with the economy downturn, we were seeing a lot more unemployed people coming in looking for jobs," said Ozgun Tumer, Yorba Linda's librarian. "We thought it was a great time to teach people ways to deal with the situation."

Fullerton Public Library offers one-on-one tutoring twice a week to help adults, including to assist people with their résumés and questions. A job kiosk allows residents to do Internet searches and file online applications, said Tim Mountain, the library's adult services manager.

Orange Public Library started general workshops earlier this year, but plans to specialize instruction this fall, including a class in Spanish, said David Price, a reference librarian.

Here are a few of the upcoming classes:

  • Job Resources Workshop, 9 to 10 a.m. July 13, Orange Public Library and History Center, 407 E. Chapman Ave., Information: 714-288-2410.
  • How to file for unemployment benefits, 7 p.m. July 27 at the Yorba Linda Public Library, 18181 Imperial Highway. Information: 714-777-2873, extension 6
  • Job searching at the library, 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Yorba Linda Public Library.

To find more workshops, check with your local library or branches through the Orange County Public Library system.
