Hospital pitches health jobs to young Latinos

As job positions dwindle in some areas, a shortage still exists in health careers. So, St. Joseph Hospital this weekend is reaching out to young Latinos to help fill those posts in the future.

On Saturday, the hospital is hosting a free Dia de los Ninos Health Care seminar and fair to teach mostly high school students about job opportunities in health care. The other sponsor is the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

Even in the economic downturn, the state's health care industry added more than 27,000 jobs between February 2008 and February 2009, according to the state.

With a growing population, Latinos especially are in demand to fill those jobs, said Sonia Valdez, a St. Joseph registered nurse and clinical coordinator. Sometimes, it can be intimidating to patients if there are language and cultural barriers.

"You need to be able to respond to the culture," Valdez said. "If you speak their language, if can look like them ... they adapt to you."

The event is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Santa Ana College's Room W101. Information: 714-290-4368.

so does that mean that, I as a white non-latino will be intimidated?
“You need to be able to respond to the culture,” Valdez said. “If you speak their language, if can look like them … they adapt to you.”
Who is going to adapt to the English speaking (no accent), white face, my culture , when I get sick?? Answer that one you Latino Racist

  • Thomas says:

Why doesn't St. Joseph hospital reach out to all Americans, irrespective of their ethnicity? I guess Latinos only need apply.

“You need to be able to respond to the culture,” Valdez said. “If you speak their language, if can look like them … they adapt to you.”

If this is not a racist statement then I do not know what is! This is simply more pandering to a group of individuals who refuse to assimilate, and as usual, to the detriment of American citizens as a whole.

When is this ethno-centric, racist pandering going to stop?

  • Jose says:

    Blah, Blah,....

I think St Joseph employment data shows that all Americans, including non-Latinos have always been welcome to apply.

"Refuse to assimilate" Yeah, more like they they can't get white enough or speako enough Harvard English for you.

Talk about racist statement, that takes the cake buddy.

Furthermore, if your so big on assimilation than why don't you call them Americans, instead of Latinos. I thought you despised the whole idea of Amercians using hypens. Right! Because in your eyes brown skinned, accent speaking people cannot be American.

Hey... Thomas the truth will set you free.

Bottom line, this mouthpiece seminar does nothing when there a (1) a wait list to even enter the Nursing program at SAC (2) there is no focus on getting these students into a reputable realistically nursing transitional progam, like those offered at many of the private schools that offer an LVN program.
