In the feature article "From debt addict to cheapskate," O.C. Register reporter Deepa Bharath tells the story of credit adviser Mary Hunt, of Garden Grove, who became any expert in economical lifestyles only after she recovered from an out-of-control shopping habit. The story begins:
Mary Hunt was face down on the floor; exhausted, hurt, defeated.
Still, who, but herself, could she blame?
She had run up a credit card bill of $100,000. She had talked her husband into quitting his bank job and getting into a business that turned out to be a scam. She had talked herself into leasing a Mercedes for herself and a Cadillac for her husband.
And, now, they had no jobs, no savings and no money to pay next month's mortgage – only more debt.
