California's Employment Development Department offices will be closed two days a month due to furloughs, but the call centers will remain open and workers will staff the phone lines, EDD says.
Last week, the EDD posted a notice saying its offices and call centers would be closed the first and third Friday of every month as part of the furlough program imposed because of California's budget crisis.
A new press release now says EDD won approval for the unemployment insurance program staff to continue working on the furlough days. A skeleton crew from the tax branch will also work because of the role they play in generating revenues by collecting payroll taxes.
Most one-stop centers and the disability insurance and paid family leave insurance offices will be closed on furlough days.
Friday, Feb. 6, will be the first furlough day that EDD offices will be closed. Offices will also be closed Feb. 20 for a furlough day. All state workers also are off on the two Presidents' Day holidays, Feb. 12 and Feb. 16.
